What do we do?

Aunties & Uncles Co-operative Family Project Ltd is an "extended" family, non-judgmental friendship and mentoring network.

The concept was pioneered in 1974 by our founder Rose White. Her vision: to build a better life for children.

Aunties & Uncles is a registered charity with trained co-ordinators who assess and screen adult volunteers and evaluate the needs of children up to the age of 12 who come from socially and emotionally disadvantaged families, and link them together for ongoing support.

The volunteers, known as Aunts and Uncles spend quality time with their "linked" child while the area co-ordinators provide ongoing support, friendship and encouragement to the parents, children, Aunts and Uncles.

"Aunts" and "Uncles" are over 21, from all walks of life, who have a friendly caring nature, a genuine liking for children, and are able to provide a safe place for a child. We call the children "nieces and nephews". Read Isobel's story.

The Aunties & Uncles Co-operative Family Project Ltd is a "grassroots" preventative program uniquely positioned as a buffer between the welfare juvenile justice systems and the family unit, dedicated to providing quality time, unconditional loving, friendship, and "Building a better life for children."

Aunties & Uncles is not a quick fix remedy - it is a long term preventative program that gradually mentors skills, friendship and encouragement to help break the welfare cycle.

A message from our patron, Rachel Ward (actor)

"All Aunts and Uncles are volunteers. Social services that encourage and facilitate communities to help each other and to foster goodwill and trust within them, should be given the greatest chance of success.

As patron of Aunties & Uncles, and an Aunty myself to a little girl through the service, I can personally endorse the great value of this much needed charitable organisation.

Funds are desperately needed, not only to continue running existing networks, but to establish Aunties & Uncles' services in increasingly depressed and needy areas. Please help us to help each other."
