Can you help us?

Things to consider before becoming an "aunt or "uncle"

Positive role-modelling is important

All families are unique and none are perfect. It is important you consider your own family´s needs and dynamics before introducing a niece or nephew.

Your niece or nephew needs your commitment

Change is a certainty in life, which is why we ask that you make a minimum 12 month commitment to provide a stable adult influence in their life.

Your niece or nephew needs your acceptance

While it is important to have rules and boundaries, challenging behavior sometimes is not the fault of the child. Your care and acceptance will benefit the child in many ways and in time you will find that your good example will set appropriate boundaries for them.

Remember to include the parent/s

You should check with the child´s parent/s before undertaking certain activities such as swimming or day-tripping - just as you would expect if it were your own child with someone else.

Working together can help create a sense of family for all

Just as the child needs acceptance, so does the parent. Some parents in our program have never had consistent care or understanding, nor the positive role modelling that you are showing their children. By taking the time to listen, you might just make a real difference in their lives as well. Remember though, you are there primarily for the child. You are not expected to take on the burdens of the family. Your Co-ordinator is there to guide you through these experiences.

Giving gifts

While your intentions may be good, gift-giving can sometimes patronise and offend. The most valuable gift you give as a volunteer aunt or uncle is your quality time.

Try not to be possessive

You may become attached to the child yourself and find it difficult to accept or understand their relationships with their parent/s. Before choosing to volunteer, we ask that you reflect on your personal motivation to make such a commitment.
