Points for Parents

The aunt/uncle is not there to take your place or responsibilities as mum or dad. Be honest with the aunt or uncle as to what you expect from the relationship.

The aunt/uncle is not a "Santa Claus" figure, a convenient babysitter or a taxi service for your child.

Try to avoid the threat of loss of the aunt/uncle as a means of discipline for your child - this undermines the relationship.

Some existing problems in the relationship with your child are not going to suddenly disappear. However, you will now have more time to work on them.

Encourage the child/family to be considerate of special occasions in the life of the aunt/uncle, e.g. birthdays etc. Perhaps a phone call or card made by the child would be a lovely surprise.

Realise that the aunt/uncle are giving their time, attention and concern to the relationship, with no payment. A simple "thank-you, I really appreciate you taking an interest in..." is often welcome.
